Starting an Ezine or Newsletter

Starting an ezine (Email Magazine) or email newsletter is quite easy.

Here are the basic steps:
  1. Choose a topic

You can choose any topic that you like, although obviously it helps if you choose a topic that people will be interested in reading!

You do not need to choose marketing or making money for your topic - but if you do, you might do better by choosing a more specific topic (for example, instead of just "making money" how about "making money on eBay" etc.)

One other consideration is choosing your topic: is how you intend to make money from it. For example, if you hope to make money from affiliate programs, you ought to choose a topic which ties in with plenty of decent affiliate programs (otherwise you'll have nothing to promote).

  2. Sort out the mechanics

While, in theory, you could run an ezine yourself just using your email program, and manually keeping track of subscribe and unsubscribe requests, you would quickly find that doing so is likely to be at best incredibly time-consuming, and at worst, totally impractical.

You will therefore need some sort of script or program to manage your mailing list. There are many programs and scripts available which are specifically designed for running a mailing list. Alternatively, many (but not all) autoresponders are able to not only work as autoresponders, but can also run mailing lists.

  3. Promote Your Ezine

Now you've set up your ezine and subscription process, the next step is to start getting subscribers.

At minimum, what you should do is at the subscription form to your web pages.

There is also whole section of this site dedicated to getting ezine subscribers, so you can read that for ideas.

  4. Send Out The First Issue

Once you've set up your ezine and got some subscribers, it's time to send out the first edition of your ezine.

Obviously, you'll need to prepare the text, but you should also read our formatting tips to ensure that your ezine displays properly on all your subscribers' computers.

The exact process for sending out the newsletter will depend on what program/script you use, so check the instructions that with that.
